Please don't call sudden slack huddles without context
Don't start a call without context. Provide context about what you need to discuss, how long it will take, and offer scheduling options. The person you're contacting might be in deep focus, in another meeting, or dealing with personal matters. It also might not be as much of a priority as you think.
Don't do this:
Keith2:32 PM called you. lmk when free
Tim2:32 PM about what?
Keith2:33 PM call back when free
Tim2:45 PM I'm in the middle of something, what's it about?
The issue: Starting a call request without context forces the recipient to:
Stop their current work to decide if they want to talk
Mentally context-switch without preparation
Wonder if it's urgent or can wait
Feel obligated to respond immediately
This creates unnecessary interruptions and anxiety.
Do this instead:
Dawn2:32 PM Hi! Need 15 mins about the API integration issues? I'm seeing some errors in the logs and would like to walk through them together. Blocking for later today. LMK if available now
Tim2:32 PM I'm in focus mode until 4 PM. Can we do 4:15?
Dawn2:33 PM Perfect! I'll move it to 4:15 PM. Thanks!
Tim2:33 PM 👍
Much better! This approach:
Provides context about the topic and urgency
Estimates the time needed
Offers scheduling flexibility
Respects the recipient's current focus
Reduces anxiety and interruption
Allows them to keep calls open for real emergencies
The recipient can decide when to engage based on their current priorities.
